With less than a week until the new season starts, Telegraph Sport assesses which players stood out and who has work to do
Premier League champions Manchester City beat FA Cup winners Manchester United 7-6 on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley on Saturday after the traditional season curtain-raiser finished level at 1-1.
United created a host of chances to take the lead and were rewarded when 20-year-old substitute Alejandro Garnacho ran through the City defence to slide the ball into the bottom corner of the net in the 82nd minute.
Erik ten Hag’s team looked on course to repeat their shock victory over City in last season’s FA Cup final but midfielder Bernardo Silva headed in an equaliser a minute from time to send the match to penalties.
Manuel Akanji scored the decisive penalty for City after Silva had earlier missed a spot-kick in the shootout.
Telegraph Sport analyses and rates each player’s performance.
Wonderful save in the shootout. Beaten by Garnacho’s goal with a reverse finish, with the woodwork or the offside flag coming to his rescue also. No glaring errors but no string of saves either. 7/10
Lively early run into the opposition territory, and he is a real threat going forward from full-back. His versatility and maturity could be useful for City this season. 6/10
One of those returning after playing in the Euro knockouts and looks assured at centre-back, with the ability to step forward into midfield. Was helped there was no centre-forward to battle with. 6/10
Looked wobbly after a blow to the head blocking a shot but was okay to continue. His passing was a little rusty, which City will hope will come in time. 6/10
Tried his luck from long range when he went forward and at times was on the back foot when wingers were running at him. 5/10
Good replacement for Rodri when the Spaniard is not there but he does not control games like his team-mate. Started to push forward later in the game. 6/10
Huge vote of confidence to be selected in front of Kalvin Phillips. At 19, he has good discipline and also has the legs to get forward and join attacks. 6/10
Hit the post with his best effort, it was a positive display from the young midfielder who can make a contribution next season as a squad player. 7/10
Excellent cross for the equaliser and an overall positive display from the young player who could start the season in the first-team shake-up. This will help his cause. 7/10
He was City’s main attacking threat when he was on for the first hour, showing the ability to go either side of his opponent and get dangerous crosses in. Savinho competition will push him. 7/10
Struggled to get chances. He is not often a central figure in build-up play but it means the pressure is on to take chances – but they never came his way. 4/10
Subs: Savinho 63 (Doku), Matheus Nunes BOOKED 63 (O’Reilly), Bernardo Silva BOOKED 80 (McAtee), Kevin De Bruyne 90 (Bobb), Nathan Ake 90 (Gvardiol)Not used: Stefan Ortega (g), Scott Carson (g), Kalvin Phillips, Issa Kabore
Glimpses of the risks he has insisted United will take next season but looked safe overall with this kicking and did not have much to do in the way of shots to save and no chance with Silva’s goal. 6/10
May have competition from Noussair Mazraoui at right-back soon but he looks ready to meet the challenge. Doku looked to have the beating of him before coming back into the game. 6/10
Poor penalty in the shootout. But during the 90 minutes, who would have thought he would have such an important role for United? He is fit, for a start, and his experience will be valuable cover as United cope with injuries. 5/10
United’s backline looked shaky at times but Maguire was solid enough himself. His best moments were blocking crosses that came his way. Good positioning from the player looking to put England heartache behind him. 7/10
Looked so strong at centre-back – and so uncomfortable at left-back. He stepped in for Luke Shaw but was guilty of an error that led to a City chance. Once he moved back inside he was a different player and won all in front of him. 6/10
His passing was sharp in the first half, sending Amad through for his chance with his most incisive piece of play. Error in a dangerous area in the second half. 6/10
Ran the FA Cup final last time he was at Wembley with United. This was more understated, with glimpses of what he is capable of when he received the ball in tight areas. 6/10
The positive to take is that he is fit and ready to go for the new season. He was involved in play but will be hoping for bigger contributions as he gets his rhythm back after injury problems. 5/10
Too unselfish when he raced through but this was a promising display, with direct running that troubled City. Will be a fine addition to the winger options if he stays at United rather than go on loan. 7/10
One of the great Wembley goals that never counted when his dipping long-ranger flew into the top corner. Was a good threat as a ‘false nine’ and got other shots away. 6/10
Will be disappointed with his finishing when two big chances came his way but was at least in the right position to miss. Other strikers may not get two clear chances against City per game. 5/10
