In 1857, the paddle wheel steamer S.S. Central America sank in a violent hurricane off the coast of North Carolina. In her holds lay a vast treasure of California Gold Rush coins. The gold wouldn’t be located until the 1980s, but found new life in these fantastic "Horseman" commemoratives. Restrikes of the famous Forty-Niner Horseman, each Gold Proof was struck in 2002 from more than a half-ounce of gold assayed in 1857 by Justh & Hunter and recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck!
These 49er Horseman coins are special commemoratives designed to look like the original Horseman coin from Baldwin & Co. They have a special link to California Gold Rush history and to the S.S. Central America shipwreck. Each one contains .54 ounces of gold that was recovered from ingots assayed in 1857 by Justh & Hunter and recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck.
Only 4,006 of these coins were issued and all were struck in 2002. They were made with painstaking detail using original methods that would have been used with the original Horseman coins of 1850.
Each coin is struck with a beautiful mirrored finish and is designated by PCGS as Deep Cameo Proof. They are remarkable pieces to own and are a very important part of California Gold Rush history.
(.943 Fine California Gold Justh & Hunter 4328.098)   I believe from my research the 4328 is the number of the ingot the gold for the coin came from.  And the number 098 is the number of the coin minted.
This set only contains the graded coin, the 'pinch of gold' which should be in the second section is missing.  This is the way I purchased it several years ago at an auction.  Otherwise this set is complete with everything shown in the pictures.  includes the COA signed by Bob Evans.
