Description
Up for auction is aVntg contemporary Yakama Native American Hand Woven Jute Sally/Wapaas Bag w Leather Cinch Top
that was wonderfully, uniformly and tightly Hand Woven by someone who knew their craft. I recently sold a smaller one of these bags, presumably made by the same person. Sally bags, known also as wapaas and aqw'alkt respectively among the Wasco and Wishram people, are woven with a unique full-turn twining method long practiced by native Americans of the mid-Columbia River Region. I would presume that this is a fairly modern bag due to the good condition and strong colors of the black, gray, brown & natural color jute twine, and the commercially tanned suede leather. It weighs 1.34 lbs. and is 16" tall with a 8" diameter, and a bottom diameter of 5". The woven bag section is 6 1/2" tall and the top leather section is 4" tall. At the top of the bag there is a leather cinch to close the bag with. The top leather flap is 7 7/8" long by 5 1/4" wide with a buckle strap closure. The outer layer of this top flap is the same suede coco colored leather. The inner layer of the flap is fabric with an eroding rubberized surface. There is a 45" long adjustable shoulder strap that is 3/8" wide. It can be adjusted up to 12" longer. It can be worn as a one strap backpack.
I'm selling this for a friend who found this in a car that was just about to be crushed at a wrecking yard. This wrecking yard is located near the Yakima Indian Reservation in Central WA State.

This bag is in over all quite good, clean, lightly used, functional condition. The bag has no off odors. There is an ink stain on the bottom of the bag. There is a hole in the weaving on the left lower side with 2 bushy ends sticking out. This hole will need to be stitched and tied off to prevent it from getting worse. And on the backside of the bag near the base, under the backpack strap, there is a loop of twine that has been pulled and stretched out of place. Lastly, there is a section where the top flap and the shoulder strap is sewn to the top of the bag were the stitching has come loose and will need to be repaired before it is used.
